New Horizons. La recensione del nuovo singolo di Brian May

Accade tutte le notti. Non appena il sole si lascia inghiottire dalla linea dell'orizzonte e il cielo perde tutti i suoi colori, compare nell'oscurità la prima stella della sera. Ad essa ne seguono molte altre, fino a disegnare fra le tenebre forme e archi di luce. Non hanno la forza di dissipare l'oscurità, eppure osservarle è una tentazione a cui è impossibile resistere. Succedeva milioni di anni fa, quando l'essere umano non conosceva ancora il linguaggio e al calar della sera fuggiva spaventato a nascondersi. E succede ancora oggi, quando ci ritroviamo da soli ad ammirare la volta stellata, quasi che tra quelle luci così lontane sia celato un richiamo o forse un messaggio in codice che da sempre tentiamo di decifrare.

L'ultima frontiera di quell'immenso oceano di stelle che l'uomo si appresta a toccare ha un nome antico e nobile: Ultima Thule. Nel ;edioevo era il nome con cui veniva chiamata la leggendaria isola posta al di là dell'ultimo orizzonte, la terra più misteriosa e irraggiungibile. Per noi, ebbri dei festeggiamenti per il Nuovo Anno, Ultima Thule è il nome dato ad un oggetto astronomico, un asteroide o forse un gruppo di rocce perse nel cosmo, al di sopra delle quali la sonda della NASA New Horizons viaggia veloce, prolungamento ideale delle dita con le quali vorremmo, notte dopo notte, toccare le stelle.

L'incontro tra New Horizons e Ultima Thule avverrà tra poche ore, forse addirittura una manciata di minuti mentre state leggendo queste parole. È uno degli eventi più importanti della storia dell'umanità, perché Ultima Thule rappresenta il punto più lontano raggiunto dall'uomo attraverso una macchina, eccezion fatta per le sonde Voyager che da decenni sono diventate viaggiatrici intergalattiche, ma non più guidate dalla Terra. New Horizons è invece una navicella abilmente governata dal centro di controllo della NASA situato nel Maryland. Di fronte ai computer e agli strumenti scientifici pronti a raccogliere le informazioni che Ultima Thule vorrà rivelarci, stanno i tecnici dell'ente spaziale americano. E Brian May.

Il nostro amato chitarrista si trova lì nella duplice veste di scienziato e musicista. Perché da qualche tempo è consulente della NASA (ha realizzato, ad esempio, le prime immagini stereoscopiche di Plutone) e perché nel mese di Maggio ha raccolto l'invito lanciato da Alan Stern di scrivere una canzone che facesse da colonna sonora all'incontro tra New Horizons e Ultima Thule. Brian ha raccolto la sfida, ha sondato il proprio animo e attinto alle energie che da sempre ne contraddistinguono l'agire tra mille attività diverse. Il risultato è il brano che da domani mattina potremo ascoltare dopo che dalla NASA sarà stato inviato proprio lì, fino al limitare del cosmo fino ad oggi conosciuto.

E allora io sono qui, a raccontarvi di questa nuova canzone, che per noi fans segna non solo un passaggio epocale nella storia dell'umanità ma anche il più modesto, ma per noi importantissimo, ritorno di Brian May alla carriera solista. Non accadeva da ben due decenni. Un tempo troppo lungo per non gioire fin dall'annuncio che il 1° Gennaio 2019 sarebbe stato segnato dall'uscita del suo nuovo singolo. Una felicità che oggi, in questi minuti, mi fa esultare perché trova piena e assoluta conferma nella bellezza della canzone.

New Horizons, questo l'inevitabile titolo del singolo, con l'ulteriore sottolineatura “Ultima Thule Mix” è una canzone in perfetto stile Brian May. Ed è forse questa la sorpresa più grande che rivela il primo ascolto. Perché pur essendo trascorsi così tanti anni, quello stile così tipico che abbiamo imparato a conoscere ed amare fin dai primi album dei Queen è presente in tutta la sua gloria. Di più, New Horizons si inserisce perfettamente in quel contesto creativo grazie al quale Brian May ha dato alle stampe Back To The Light prima e Another World poi. Nulla sembra essere cambiato. Ma nulla in questa nuova traccia fa pensare solamente al passato.

New Horizons è una canzone totalmente proiettata al presente e, lo speriamo tutti, ad un nuovo futuro musicale del quale abbiamo sentito la mancanza per troppo tempo. Ci accoglie con la voce di Stephen Hawking, perfetto intro per annunciare il raggiungimento dell'obiettivo della sonda e che ha in sé inevitabili reminiscenze pinkfloydiane. A questo segue l'ideale viaggio intergalattico, narrato attraverso i sempre inconfondibili accordi della Red Special e la voce di Brian May che sembra quasi sospingere New Horizons verso la propria meta. Ed è questa naturalmente la seconda meravigliosa sorpresa, che ci offre la canzone: il ritorno di Brian davanti ad un microfono. Per chi lo segue da tanti anni sa che per lui cantare era diventato un esercizio assai difficile, dal quale è rifuggito più volte cedendo la ribalta a Kerry Ellis e Adam Lambert. Ma New Horizons meritava qualcosa di speciale e con essa anche noi.

La voce di Brian ci riporta indietro nel tempo, a quando sentirlo cantare era una delle consuete forme attraverso cui potevamo godere della musica dei Queen e della sua solista. La stessa canzone contiene tutti quegli elementi tipici che ci fanno dire “ecco, questo è lui, qui c'è tutto il suo stile perfettamente riconoscibile”. E così, ancora una volta, non possiamo non gioire nel ritrovare quei cori così tipicamente “alla Queen” e i fraseggi mirabilmente eseguiti alla Red Special con una energia che incanta e genera entusiasmo.

New Horizons somiglia incredibilmente a ciò a cui è destinata, ovvero un viaggio attraverso le stelle. L'effetto è generato dalla progressione che caratterizza il pezzo, un crescendo fatto di liriche ispirate e assoli di chitarra in perfetto equilibrio con il basso e la batteria, che culmina poi nell'assolo finale con il quale sul volto dell'ascoltatore emerge un sorriso di gioia. Perché il connubio tra la voce di Brian May e la sua chitarra è il nostro posto, il luogo musicale nel quale amiamo stare e dal quale siamo mancati per troppo tempo. A chiudere il brano, infine, l'ultimo messaggio di Stephen Hawking: “Esploriamo l'universo perché siamo esseri umani e perché abbiamo bisogno di sapere”.

Al momento non sappiamo cosa ci rivelerà la missione di New Horizons. Ultima Thule è, in fin dei conti, solo l'ennesimo confine da superare in cerca della prossima meta. A noi fans resta tuttavia la certezza che Brian May è tornato a regalarci musica di altissimo profilo. La speranza è che anche questa canzone sia solamente un passaggio verso qualcosa di ancora più grande. Della musica di Brian abbiamo un estremo bisogno e, se seguiranno altri brani o addirittura un nuovo album solista, al momento possiamo solo sperarlo. È l'auspicio più bello che possiamo concederci al confine tra quest'anno e il nuovo. È il desiderio del fan innamorato di questa musica meravigliosa che da oggi può aggiungere al proprio bagaglio di emozioni, anche il nuovo singolo di Brian May.

New Horizons. The review of Brian May's new single.

It happens every night. As soon as the sun is swallowed up by the horizon and the sky fades out, dissolving all its colours, the first evening star appears in the darkness. Many others will follow and draw countless shapes and arches of light in the darkness.They don’t have the strength to dispel the darkness, nonetheless to observe them is a temptation to which it’s impossible to resist. It happened millions of years ago, when human beings didn’t even know their language and at nightfall they ran away, frightened, to seek shelter. And it’s still happening today, when we find ourselves alone staring at the starry vault, just as if a call, or maybe a coded message that we have always tried to decipher, were hidden among those lights so far away.

The last frontier of that endless ocean of stars, which man is about to touch, has an ancient and noble name: Ultima Thule. In the Middle Ages it was the name given to the legendary island beyond the last horizon, the most mysterious and unreachable land. For us, inebriated with the joy of the New Year celebrations, Ultima Thule is the name given to an astronomical object, an asteroid or perhaps a group of rocks lost in the cosmos, above which the NASA New Horizons probe travels fast, just like an ideal extension of the fingers with which we would like, night after night, to touch the stars.

The meeting between New Horizons and Ultima Thule probably has just taken place when you are reading these words. It is one of the most important events in the history of mankind, because Ultima Thule represents the furthest point reached by man through a machine, except for the Voyager probes which, for decades, have become intergalactic travelers, although no longer guided by Earth. Whereas New Horizons is a spaceship skillfully governed by NASA's control center located in Maryland. In front of the computers and scientific instruments ready to collect the information that Ultima Thule wants to reveal to us, there are the technicians of the American space agency. And Brian May too.

Our beloved guitarist is there in the dual role of scientist and musician. Both because he has been a consultant to NASA for some time (for example, he created the first stereoscopic images of Pluto) and because, last May, he accepted the invitation from Alan Stern to write a song that would act as a soundtrack to the meeting between New Horizons and Ultima Thule. Brian took up the challenge, tested his soul and drew on the energies which have always distinguished his action in-between a thousand different activities. The result is this song that, since this morning, we are able to hear after being sent up there by NASA, to the limit of the cosmos known until today.

So now I'm here to tell you about this new song, which for us fans marks not only an epoch-making step in the history of mankind, but also the most modest, but very important to us, return of Brian May to a solo career. It hadn't happened in two decades. A time too long not to rejoice about the announcement that this date,1st January 2019, would be marked by the release of Brian’s new single. A total happiness that today, these very minutes, makes me full of joy because it finds full and absolute confirmation in the song’s beauty.

New Horizons, this is the inevitable title of the single, with the further emphasis "Ultima Thule Mix”, it’s a song in perfect Brian May style. And probably this is the biggest surprise that it is revealed after the first listening. Because although so many years have gone by, that typical style that we have learned to know and love since Queen's first albums is well-rooted here in all its glory. Furthermore, New Horizons fits perfectly into that creative context thanks to which Brian May gave life to Back To The Light first and, later, Another World. Nothing seems to have changed. But nothing in this new track makes you think only about the past.

New Horizons is a song totally projected into the present and, we all hope, into a new musical future which we have missed way too long. The track welcomes us with the voice of Stephen Hawking, a perfect intro to announce the achievement of the probe’s goal, and which echoes in itself some inevitable pinkfloydian reminiscences. This is followed by the ideal intergalactic journey, narrated by the always unmistakable chords of the Red Special ,and by Brian May’s voice, which seem to push New Horizons towards its ultimate goal. And this is of course the second wonderful surprise that the song offers us: Brian's return in front of a microphone. Those who have been following him for many years are aware that singing had become for Brian quite a difficult exercise, which he repeatedly tried to avoid, by giving the limelight to Kerry Ellis and Adam Lambert. But New Horizons deserved something special and, along with it, we did too.

Brian's voice takes us back in time, when hearing him sing was one of the usual ways in which we could enjoy the music of Queen as well as his solo career. The same song contains all those typical elements that make us say "here it is, this is him, here is all his perfectly recognizable style". And so, once again, we can't help but rejoice in finding those choirs so typically in "Queen" style and the phrasings, wonderfully performed on the Red Special. with an energy which spellbinds and generates enthusiasm.

New Horizons amazingly resembles what it is meant for - a journey through the stars. The effect is generated by the progression that characterizes the track, a crescendo made of inspired lyrics and guitar solos in perfect balance with the bass and drums, culminating in the final solo which brings a big smile of joy on the face of the listener. Because the union between Brian May's voice and his guitar is our place, the musical place where we love to be and which we have been missing for too long. Finally, the track ends with Stephen Hawking’s last message: "We explore the universe because we are human and we want to know".

At the moment we don't know what the New Horizons mission is going to reveal to us. Ultimate Thule is, after all, just another boundary to be crossed in search of the next destination. However we, as fans, are now sure that Brian May has returned to give us top level music of the highest profile. Our hope is that this song too is just a step towards something even greater. We are eager and have a great need for Brian's music and at the moment we can only hope that more tracks will follow or even a new solo album. It's the best wish we can give ourselves right on the edge between the old year and the new one that has just begun. It's the desire of all fans in love with this wonderful music who, as from  today, can add also this new Brian May single to their emotional baggage.
